RULES & FAQ
These rules apply to all members and moderators. Please read them carefully.

Rules
drama
Life has a bad habit of sticking itself in places it's not welcomed. Please try to keep this out of the game. If you do happen to get into drama, remember that this is just a game and try to resolve it as best as you can. Should problems arise that you feel you cannot resolve, please notify the mods.

writing styles
Good, quality writing only. While we acknowledge that mistakes have a tendency of slipping through once in a while, try your best to write with good spelling and grammar. We expect that if you join, you will produce (if not perfect, then at least) quality work. Students who are created to be from non-English speaking countries could understandably not be very fluent in the language, but we do expect that they are at least able to get their message across.

activity requirements
Nobody wants to be left hanging, and the purpose of joining an RP is to role play. Hence, we require that you post at least one journal entry every month and complete one thread every two weeks per character. Completing means actually reaching an ending and not leaving your writing partner(s) hanging. Activity checks will occur monthly; incomplete threads do not count toward your activity, so make sure you are finishing up your threads! Emails will be sent out at the end of each month to those who have not been keeping up with the activity requirement.

hiatuses
We understand the need to attend to real-life situations once in a while. If you need to take a short break, please let us know by posting on the OOC community or in the Mod Drop Box. We ask that you give us a definite time period, and keep it as short as possible.

godmodding/mary-sues
Please note that while there are magical undertones, and characters have special activities, this is still real life-based. Nobody in real life is perfect, so neither should your character. We will not tolerate characters who have no flaws, faults, quirks, or secrets in this game. When fleshing out your character in your application, please keep this in mind and try to make your character human. The mods would be happy to give suggestions if you feel stumped.

Additionally, control of someone else's character without their explicit permission is prohibited.

plot
In theory, you joined this RP so you could play with other players. We ask that you do just that, and try not to make too many plots that are set in stone. Try to let things happen on their own and interact with new characters.

That said, cliques are highly frowned upon. We understand that there are certain characters that your character would want to talk to/interact with more often than others, but that doesn't mean everyone outside of that should be excluded. This is a school, there are a billion reasons why people would end up interacting with each other.

Major plots (pregnancies, rape, death, serious rule breaking, etc.) should be discussed with the mods before put into action. Otherwise, the mods can only present to you a prompt (through campus-wide events, national events, epidemics, etc.) - it is up to you, the player, to drive the story home.

character limits
There is a limit of three (3) characters per player. This number is, however, subject to change as the game progresses. Players can only apply for one character at a time, and must allow at least two weeks to pass before they can apply for another character. Additionally, we require the activity requirement of one thread per week per character to be met, as we would like to know that they can handle a new character. We would prefer players spend time developing and fleshing out their current characters rather than creating as many as they can. Thus, if a player is applying for a second or third character, we will expect a detailed application and we will be looking at their previous characters.

Additionally, players should diversify their characters; we will not allow applications for both Faie characters or both from the same house and year. There are plenty of slots and choices, so there's no excuse. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

pb requirements
All PBs are eligible here. This is the only magical school in the world, according to in game history, so we'd expect there to be a reasonable proportion of Americans, Europeans, Asian, etc. We would love very much to see diversity. As long as you think your character has a reason to be at Idris, it’s likely we’ll accept him/her.

However, please also remember these are students between the ages of 15 and 19. We are only going to play out years five through seven, mainly because we don't like the idea of playing children who are too young. Pick someone age appropriate. We'll give you a ~5 year window to worm around in, but please use your discretion. We reserve the right to ask for a PB change.

Also, there should be a suitable amount of clear icons for your character, without any text, preferably 100x100. If you need any help finding an appropriate PB or finding icons for that PB, feel free to ask the mods.

shipping
This RP is fairly open minded, and there is no restriction on content or sexuality. Should things get too explicit, however, it must be clearly labeled in the Ratings of the posting format and the content should be hid behind an lj-cut. While we are largely okay with smut, we do frown at having it be the sole purpose of your playing here. Do make it a point to interact with other characters above and beyond trying to hook your characters up.

Please also keep in mind that not everyone in the world is bisexual or bi-curious.

in-character aim & emails
We do not require you to actually get an in-character instant messaging account, nor do we require you to get an idris.edu email. However, you are encouraged to use both to your advantage while RPing. IMs can be done through your OOC IM account, and reformatted with fictitious character IM screen names in the thread page.

While we do encourage the use of IMs and emails to interact with other characters, the mods would like to note that the central point of this RP is to thread, and therefore IMs and emails do not count toward activity. We ask that the number of your IMs and emails do not exceed the quality and quantity of your threads.

journaling & threading
Please make sure to keep track of everything going on via your friends page! There will be a lot of action, OOC posting, updates, etc. going on and it is vital that you are on top of everything. Also make sure to check once in a while to make sure that you have all the characters friended!

Make sure you follow all the instructions on the acceptance email once you receive it! It is especially important for you to post your character's profile before you begin making any more posts! Please do not friends-lock the profile post!

We ask that you please keep all entries and thread public and viewable by everyone.

Asterisks *action here* usage is discouraged and smileys are permissible within reason. We understand that since the kids are using their laptops and it is the modern day, a few smileys here and there is unavoidable. After all, this is the age of netspeak. But :) :) :D xD spammage is not cool. Don't do it. And never ever should smileys be used in threading.

Frequently Asked Questions
Here are just some of the questions that are commonly asked. If this doesn't answer your question, feel free to leave us a note in the Mod Drop Box or email us at idrismods@gmail.com

Q: When is this game set?
A: The game runs on the current Western calendar. If it's May 6, 2009 in the U.S., it's May 6, 2009 in the game. Since it is Greenland, holidays are a little different. Each student is allowed to celebrate their own specific nationality's holidays as long as they provide proof to the teachers that it's a valid holiday (and not just an excuse to get out of class.)

Q: What currency is used at Idris?
A: Idris, along with all other magical cities around the world, uses a global magic currency. Students can get their mundie currency exchanged in town.

Q: I want my character to break some rules, do they get caught?
A: Minor rule breaking is okay, as long as it is not done in an access and occasionally punished (i.e. a Head Boy/Girl, prefect, or teacher deducts points from the respective house.) Certain acts of rule breaking require a punishment or a 'dice roll'. Refer here for more details.

Q: Are roommates constant for all 7 years or different every year?
A: They're constant for all 7 years; this is just a way for your character to build a relationship with another. However, if you'd like to go the "new roommates" route, there's always the off chance (though very rare) that your characters' previous roommates left or the two just never got along (to the point where one character's health or well-being was to be questioned.) If you wanted to go this line, let one of the mods know first.

Q: Just how 'normal' is this school?
A: Idris Academy's main goal is to help those with magical abilities to assimilate back into the real, mundie world. Therefore, Idris has all the normal, human amenities that any ordinary school would have. There is wireless internet throughout campus, normal air conditioning/heating, and cable TVs in the common rooms.

Q: Is my student a 'newcomer' when I first join, or can he/she have been in school since his/her 1st year?
A: We encourage students who have been in school since their 1st year (you will have a chance to make storylines with existing students, no worries!) but special transfer students at the beginning of each year can be taken into consideration. Just talk to the mods about it.

Q: There's a club/organization I want my character to join but it's not on the list, what do I do?
A: Feel free to suggest clubs and organizations to the mods! Please include a description of the club/organization and we'll consider it. Most likely, it will be made, unless it is really far out there.

Q: What do I do if I want a teacher to be part of a thread?
A: Let the mods know either through IM or the drop box. The mods will play the teachers just to keep things simple, clean, and consistent!

Q: Do witches have to be girls?
A: No! All magical groups are open to both males and females!

Q: Are we only allowed the abilities stated on the magical groups page? (i.e. telepathy, telekineses, teleportation)
A: Nope! We'd love for you to be inventive and come up with your own. Just explain it to us in the applications page and you should be fine. This applies for both mages and witches!

Q: What do all the positions in student government mean and what do they do?
A: The Head Boy and Head Girl are in charge of the student body and the student government. They are allowed to give & take points from students, within reason. The 4 Prefects (one from each house) are allowed to take points from students, but not from each other or the Head Boy & Girl. They are also in charge of policing the student body and do have duties to patrol their hall half an hour after curfew to make sure that everyone has gone back into their rooms.

While everyone on the student government participate in the student-ran court system, the senators are the ones who are most integral to that process. While they do not have power to give or take points from students, they are held responsible to report any rule breaking they witness.

Q: I want my character to issue a challenge to another character in the game, how do I go about doing this?
A: Challenges should be issued IC directly via an e-mail to the Heads of Houses. All players will be able to view the e-mail in the rp comm, but characters will have no knowledge of it unless they are the receivers. Players of both parties can then work it out amongst themselves whether or not they want the duel to be played out. If so, it is highly recommended that both players are aware of what's going to happen in the thread so that there is not risk of godmodding.

Q: How old should my character be?
A: We're going to say your PB should be somewhere between the age of 15-19 because we are only going to play out 5th-7th year students. We feel it gets a little too awkward and strange if we let the age go any lower. However, if you are playing a Faie, do keep in mind that Faie age differently and one who looks 15-19 years old would probably be centuries old in real life. Faie, however, mature slowly as well, so they should still act like a regular 15-19 year old! Maybe a little more mature if you're so inclined.

Also, when choosing a face to play your character, please keep it real. If you're going to choose Shawn Ashmore for a 7th year for example, use images of him back when he was 18 or 19 and not ones of him when he's 28 or 29. We'll allow a bit of wiggle room, but not too much. Any questions, feel free to ask the mods.

Q: Do Faie students study at Idris for centuries? When are they admitted to Idris?
A: Faie students are admitted to Idris when they are 15-19 Faie years of age. They should age normally until 10 years old and then start slowing down significantly (about 50 human years for every one year they age). They usually spend another few hundred years at home before going off to Idris Academy, so they at least look 15-19 years old (and they'll most likely look that way throughout their 7 years at Idris.) here is a nice little age conversion chart for you:

15: 260-310 human years
16: 310-360 human years
17: 360-410 human years
18: 410-460 human years
19: 460-510 human years

Their actual ages are not our main concern, so long as you're not playing them with really young/old PBs, we are fine with it. Faie students similarly study for seven years at Idris like their counterparts, regardless of what age they may be when they enter. This means that it is entirely possible for a fifth year Faie student to actually be older than a seventh year. Most enter when they begin looking 15ish, but it's okay if they choose to enter a little younger or a little older. But please account for all that clearly in your app and include reasons for early/late admission into the Academy.
